Selection of grapes is the first and the foremost step for winemaking, which are then put through a variety of processes before being available as finished wine in bottles. Apart from grapes, some fruit or other non toxic plant material can also serve as source of wine. Water serves as a major ingredient in most wines; however there is a kind of wine which has honey as its second major ingredient.
Carbonation sets apart two classes of wine making- one without it called still wine production and other with it is called sparkling wine production. The quality of grapes is the prime factor that determines the quality of wine and the quality of grapes is in turn affected by weather during the growing season, soil minerals and acidity, time of harvest and pruning method. To preserve wine and also to prevent unwanted fermentation in the bottle, a final dose of sulphite is added during bottling. My next post will be about, beer and wine making kit.
