Is fasting ok?

Eat stop eat has proved to be a controversial book after its release. This book claims to allow you to lose weight by fasting every other day. Now we know that long-term fasting is bad for us, that is obvious. But can short-term fasting hurt us, or is it beneficial like the author says and will help to kickstart the body into losing weight? I think we have to see more proof first as I have always heard that fasting makes the body go into ‘starvation mode’ where it tries to conserve as much fat and energy as possible – quite the opposite to what you are trying to achieve!
