It’s quite amazing how in a minute, you’re buying a product online and in the next – you receive a thank you e-mail from the online store you’ve just deal business with, expressing gratitude over your patronage of their product or services. Today, this is a common scenario among top websites and online stores as this simple act of entertaining the client’s e-mails adds to the prestige of the business. How do they do so? They install and employ an auto responder programs – computer software that automatically answers e-mails being sent to them. Back then, the first autoresponders were created within mail transfer agents that notified when they could not deliver an e-mail to a given address. These create bounce messages such as "your e-mail could not be delivered because…" responses (heard of Yahoo! Mailer Daemon?). Autoresponders are often used as e-mail marketing tools, to immediately provide information to their prospective customers and then follow them up at preset intervals.
